Food, film, fashion, and free [events]. Let’s get this party started.
Calendar summarized below:
ReLove Anniversary Party
Category: Party (Fashion)
Date: Saturday, February 24th @ 6pm (Add to Google Calendar)
Location: ReLove (San Francisco location)
Price Range: Free to enter
Why I Care: ReLove is a black-owned vintage institution that has succeeded against all odds. The party promises curated vintage (for purchase), an outdoor bar, a champagne toast, and most importantly, dancing.
Their Oakland grand opening party was lit, so bring the vibes and RSVP here.
In The Mood For Love
Category: Film
Date: Monday, February 19th @ 8:50pm (Add to Google Calendar)
Location: Roxie Theater
Price Range: $14 (plus fees)
Why I Care: I first saw this film in a class titled “Visual Fabrics: Film, Fashion, and Material Culture.” The beauty of Wong Kar Wai’s masterpiece extends to every part of the film, from the purely aesthetic to its heart-tugging emotional complexity; the BBC named it their 2nd best film of the 21st century for a reason.
Plus the Roxie is just great. Enjoy as part of their Broken Hearts Cinema Club series.
Chef Pop-Up @ ICA San Francisco
Category: Party (Art + Culinary)
Date: Thursday, February 22nd @ 5pm (Add to Google Calendar)
Location: ICA San Francisco
Price Range: Free to enter
Why I Care: We have a double bill for the ICA SF this week. The institution is doing the most to involve community beyond the traditional gallery guardrails, including this monthly chef pop-up. Enjoy food from Petite Percebes, wine from Snail Bar, and live drawing from artist Jules Butt.
RSVP here.
Opening Reception: "HUES" - An Exhibit of Bay Area Black Artists
Category: Party (Art)
Date: Thursday, February 22nd @ 6pm (Add to Google Calendar)
Location: Office of Senator Scott Wiener
Price Range: Free to enter
Why I Care: Shoutout to @artspansf for highlighting this event. I’ve found limited details on the exhibition, but I appreciate the senator’s office creating space for local Black artists, so let’s give it a go. Sending good vibes to the parking gods as I navigate from the ICA to downtown during rush hour.
RSVP required.
901 Lounge @ ICA San Francisco
Category: Party (Art + Culinary)
Date: Friday, February 23 @ 6pm (Add to Google Calendar)
Location: ICA San Francisco
Price Range: $9.01 (club member) - $20 (non-club member)
Why I Care: This social club may cost less than your taxed and tipped oat milk matcha. The monthly 901 Lounge is part of the 901 Club, which starts at $9.01/month and includes exhibition previews + complimentary food/drink. Think fun new bar or restaurant, but with “the element of art on top of that.”
RSVP here.
Black Joy Parade
Category: Fair
Date: Sunday, February 25th @ 12:30pm (Add to Google Calendar)
Location: Starting @ 14th St & Franklin St, Oakland
Price Range: Free to enter
Why I Care: Oakland is wrapping up Black History Month with its annual Black Joy parade. With 200+ black owned vendors, live performances, and (of course) a parade, Black Joy is a family-friendly celebration of Bay Area color. Plus, gotta love the swag.
SF Ballet’s Mere Mortals (Encore Performance)
Category: Performance (Ballet)
Date: Wednesday, April 24th @ 7:30pm (Add to Google Calendar)
Location: War Memorial Opera House
Price Range: $29+
Why I Care: Mere Mortals is less a traditional ballet and more a gesamtkunstwerk where dance, music, and visual artistry keep you on the edge of your seat and end in an afterparty. I previously described it as The Matrix meets The Ring meets the end of the world with a hint of Petite Mort. Swan Lake, this is not, but I’ve seen a lot of dying swans in my day and love the energy it brought to the opera house.
Sharing now as the original show sold out earlier this season. Multiple performance dates available, just highlighted the one with the most availability.
Next Drop: Thursday, February 29th
