A Jackson Square gallery crawl, an embroidery-focused fashion pop-up, and the San Francisco Art Book Fair
I love all my SFH[N]C events equally, but the San Francisco Has [No] Culture: East Bay Art Crawl is slightly more equal than the others. The event allowed me to shepherd readers through a typical day of art hopping, built around SF Art Week. Not only that, it gave me the chance to meet subscribers I now call friends, and to watch friends grow more at ease engaging with artists. The cherry on top was ending it all at Drake’s Dealership, where everyone had a chance to dive deeper and swap numbers with new connections over bites and beer.

Jackson Square Art Walk + Lunch

Why I Care: San Francisco Art Week is hosting a tour of exhibitions around Jackson Square. The name suggests a single week, but the organization now brings programming like this art walk to the Bay year-round. This event is a chance to visit Scott Richards Contemporary Art, Rebecca Camacho Presents, ICA SF at the Transamerica building, and Gallery Wendi Norris, all within Jackson Square. The tour includes thirty minutes at each space, plus a bring-your-own lunch break to enjoy in the company of other art aficionados.

Hangtime: An Oakland Yard Wine Fair

Why I Care: Oakland Yard is hosting its first wine fair: Hangtime. The wine shop regularly organizes fairs featuring vendors, artisans, and vintage shops, with this one shifting the spotlight to ten winemakers from across the region. A ticket gets you access to try more than thirty wines over a five-hour period, enough time to work through pours at your own pace. Chef pop-ups will be on hand throughout, so you are fed between tastings and not running on wine alone.
Open Studio | Things in a Room

Why I Care: Artist Holly Li is opening her studio to the public to shareworks in progress, alongside an accompanying exhibition. The artist recycles the everyday to create works of art, with objects like plastic bags being transformed into a dress. Li has also curated a selection of vintage items and will be hosting a pre-launch tasting of KULE, a Chinese-medicine-inspired sparkling tonic not yet released to the public (and that I may have actually tried and loved at a Heath Ceramics tour last year).

Why I Care: Let’s applaud San Francisco Art Book Fair for ten years of bringing arts and literary vendors to Minnesota Street Project! This is my third year in a row highlighting the opening night party because the event draws so many wonderful local and international creatives. In addition to the various publications on offer, the fair cultivates a buzzing energy that brings attendees and booths to life, making the opening night party particularly special. Grab a limited edition SFABF t-shirt to not only support this free programming but also walk away with some sweet merch.
San Francisco Jewish Film Festival | mdbr mdbr: Brian Chase & Annie Albagli

Why I Care: San Francisco Jewish Film Festival is screening mdbr mdbr: Brian Chase & Annie Albagli, an experimental music film produced specifically for the festival. The film explores ‘wilderness’ through sound, a theme built directly into its title: mdbr plays on the Hebrew words medaber (speaking) and midbar (nature). Behind the title are Yeah Yeah Yeahs drummer Brian Chase and Bay Area artist Annie Albagli, a pairing of a rock percussionist and a multimedia artist, both of whom have built their practice around auditory experimentation.

Why I Care: 500 Capp Street Foundation is holding an opening reception for two solo artist shows: Abstract Objects of Devotion and The Ringing in My Eyes. Both shows take place in the former home and studio of David Ireland, which influenced how the artists approached their respective exhibitions. Artist Amy Trachtenberg’s friendship with Ireland directly informs the works and curation of her art within Abstract Objects of Devotion. Andy Vogt, meanwhile, works with salvaged materials and has created site-specific installations in conversation with the home’s architecture. Artist remarks begin at 7pm.
Pop-Up Shop | No Borders

Why I Care: Fashion, arts, and crafts platform No Borders is bringing its artistry to couchdate for one weekend only. The platform started as a vintage shop in Mumbai and has since grown into a space where artists and artisans from across Asia, Africa, the Americas, the Middle East, and the UK are provided agency and access to global communities. Embroidery is a core part of that practice, which is why the pop-up will feature hand-embroidered pieces, along with art and other merch.
